Many candidates search for the “KMLE exam” when they mean the Kuwait Ministry of Health licensing exam delivered by Prometric. In 2026, Kuwait announced a new exam that really is called the Kuwait Medical Licensing Examination (KMLE). This article explains what is known about each, what is still unclear, and what it means for your preparation.

Key takeaways
  • The current Prometric exam is officially titled “Kuwait Licensing Exam” and covers registrar and senior grades.
  • News reports from 2026 describe a new KMLE (medicine) and KDLE (dentistry) for new graduates, effective 1 January 2027.
  • The new exams are reported to be governed by a board at the Kuwait Institute for Medical Specialization (KIMS).
  • Format, fees, delivery partner and eligibility for KMLE/KDLE had not been published officially when we checked.
  • Until official details appear, the nine Prometric blueprints remain the best published guide to Kuwait MOH exam content.

The current Kuwait MOH exam (Prometric)

Prometric delivers the licensing exam for the Medical Licensing Department of the Kuwait Ministry of Health at test centres worldwide (Prometric Kuwait MOH page). Its published document, titled “Kuwait Licensing Exam”, contains blueprints for nine exams — General Practitioner, Internal Medicine, Registered Nurse, Ophthalmology, Critical Care, Anesthesia, Dermatology, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Lab Technician. Each has 150 MCQs in 170 minutes plus a break (Anesthesia 190 minutes), three attempts (Ophthalmology two), and pass marks of 60% or 65%/70% depending on the exam and grade.

Prometric groups these exams by grade: “Seniors” exams for consultant, senior specialist, specialist and senior registrar, and “Register” exams for registrar level. The document does not use the term “KMLE”.

The new KMLE and KDLE (from 2027)

According to reports by Kuwaiti media (Al Rai / KUNA, 25 February 2026; Arab Times, 25 February 2026; Arab Times, 27 April 2026), a ministerial decree in 2026 created the Kuwait Medical Licensing Examination (KMLE) and the Kuwait Dental Licensing Examination (KDLE). New medical and dental graduates must pass them before appointment as resident or registered assistant, with effect from 1 January 2027. The reports describe an examination board based at the Kuwait Institute for Medical Specialization (KIMS).

Treat KMLE details with care

We could not find the decree text on official MOH or KIMS websites. Rely on official announcements for exam dates, format and eligibility, and be cautious of any website claiming to know the KMLE format in detail.

What should you do now?

  • If you are applying for a registrar or senior post, prepare for the Prometric exam using the official blueprint for your specialty.
  • If you are a new graduate in Kuwait, watch for official KIMS and MOH announcements about the KMLE/KDLE and build a strong foundation in core clinical medicine or dentistry.
  • Whatever your pathway, practise with original MCQs and read explanations — the skills transfer between exams.
